The kosher kitchen design guide

How do you design a kosher kitchen? Passover kitchen, yes or no? guide properly.

If you thought that designing a kitchen is a difficult story, think about designing a kosher kitchen... a kosher kitchen requires special and different planning, and in fact twice as much as a normal kitchen. For example, separation between the meat area and the dairy area, many storage places and more... "The design of the chair and the bar" Presents you with a number of tips that are worth reading before you start planning a kosher kitchen.

Storage Solutions:

Each planned kitchen space is different, but they all have one thing in common - the need for storage. Who among us does not know that a kosher kitchen requires a lot of storage space for holiday and Shabbat utensils, dairy and meat sets. And Passover dishes, which is another topic in itself. Therefore, in almost every kosher kitchen you will see upper storage cabinets that reach up to the ceiling to utilize every available square meter. It is important to pay attention to placing the less useful tools in the upper cabinets. Make sure that the cabinets are of a maximum depth that will allow you to store large pots in them.

Separation between meat and milk:

In a kosher kitchen it is very important to use the kitchen space in the ideal way. Since according to the Halacha it is forbidden to mix meat and dairy, the kitchen requires double planning. Two sinks, two marble countertops and two ovens. Planning is easier in a large kitchen.
The question is, is it possible to put all this goodness into a standard or small size kitchen? With correct and precise planning, it is possible to provide good solutions that will provide an excellent response to a kosher kitchen.

How do you create separation in a small kitchen ideally?

Creating two sinks and two marble countertops. Many designers slightly enlarge the sink and divide it into meaty and dairy. You need to make sure the sink is big enough to hold large pots.
Regarding the oven, you can put one oven that for the sake of the example will be used for meat food, and a toaster oven for milk that can be stored in the closet. Another option is to compromise and purchase a large oven that is divided into two separate compartments. That way you will have a meat and dairy oven.

Kitchen island:

To begin with, it is appropriate to set aside separate work surfaces for meat and dairy, therefore if you have an island in the kitchen you can decide that it will be intended for meat foods and the marble will be dairy or vice versa. Use the space under the island to store large kitchen utensils such as bowls, mixer, toaster oven and more.
When you have an island in the kitchen you can connect a bar table with Chairs for the island And thus create a counter and save a separate dining area in the kitchen.

Don't forget the Shabbat platter...

If you have a small kitchen and the corresponding marble, check that at the very least there is a place to put a Shabbat plate, so that you don't find yourself on Shabbat cutting a salad on the table in the living room.
If you have a large kitchen, place the plate in places that are not too close to the cabinets.
You have to take into account the storage of the plate and the Shabbat heat during the week and allocate a place for them.

microwave

Many people use a microwave, because in a kosher kitchen one microwave is used for milk and a second microwave for meat. You have to take into account the double storage of the microwave for meat and dairy.
If you still don't have room for two microwaves, you can use the microwave for both milk and meat, you just need to isolate the food that gets heated by using a closed plastic box.

Kosher refrigerator

Every kosher kitchen must have a kosher refrigerator:
Why? Here are the challenges of kosher keepers when opening the refrigerator on Shabbat:

  • Every refrigerator has a light installed that turns on when the refrigerator is opened.
  • Refrigerators have a thermostat designed to maintain the cold level in the refrigerator. When the temperature is high, the compressor works until it reaches the correct temperature. When you open the refrigerator, heat enters from the outside and thus the compressor comes into operation.

The solution to this is a refrigerator that, at the push of a button, enters Shabbat mode. The switch disconnects the bulb and thus the compressor operates at limited times.

Cleaning the kitchen

Cleanliness is important in any kitchen around the world, but in a kosher kitchen it is extra important that the meat and dairy products do not mix. Therefore, it is important to note that the countertop and work island are easily cleaned.

Passover kitchen

I remember that at my parents' house, every Passover eve there was a discussion about when to take the Passover dishes off the stove, and somehow, always when they took the dishes down, one dish would break or disappear. Today the story of the Boydam is over. Once you have a Passover kitchen, it saves you time and a lot of headache. You can cook chametz foods right up to the last minute.
If you have a large kitchen, you can plan an entire Passover kitchen that includes marble surfaces and gas. If your kitchen is small, allocate two or three cabinets to store the Passover utensils. It is important that they are deep.
By the way, a Passover kitchen is a bonus, but if there is no room, literally It can be waived. After all, this is about one week a year.

In the end, don't give up on the design

Many think that since a kosher kitchen should be very functional and requires more practicality, it is possible to compromise on the design. A good interior designer knows how to combine the two.
